Your Changing Eyes

As we perform daily activities such as reading, watching television or working at the computer, our eyes are constantly focusing on objects at varying distances – up close, far away and everything in-between. The ability to quickly change focus throughout this range of vision is called accommodation.

Unfortunately, this ability diminishes as we grow older, causing us to become dependent on bifocals or reading glasses. This gradual loss of reading vision is called presbyopia, and, like cataracts, most adults will experience it at some point.

Thanks to recent advances in replacement lens technology, the surgeons at McDonald Eye Associates are now able to correct presbyopia and cataracts at the same time. Because we realize that each of our patients has unique needs, McDonald Eye Associates offers a range of advanced lens options so that we can help you achieve the best possible vision for your lifestyle, with the least dependence on glasses.

Each lens option has its particular strengths, and different lenses are more appropriate for different people. We work hard to understand your needs and educate you so that you can make an informed choice.

ReSTOR®

The ReSTOR® lens uses similar technology to that used for years in microscopes and telescopes to improve image quality. The lens’s apodized surface is designed to smoothly blend the focus from near to far. ReSTOR is best for patients who do little night driving, spend a great deal of time reading and do not mind wearing glasses for arm’s length activities such as using a computer. Crystalens™ and Trulign™ Toric

Crystalens and Trulign Toric, both by Bausch + Lomb, are currently the only FDA-approved intraocular lenses that use a method called accommodation, enabling sharper vision at multiple distances for people who have undergone cataract surgery.

Crystalens™ works by moving with the muscles in your eye, in much the same way as your natural lens. The lens’s unique design results in excellent vision at all distances, though there will likely be a period where your eye must learn to work with the new lens. Crystalens is best for active patients who do not mind wearing glasses for very fine print and require good vision for night driving. For further information, click here.

The Trulign IOL is a toric version of Crystalens; it is the first of its kind to provide both accommodation and astigmatism correction.

While these lenses are most commonly implanted during cataract surgery, they are also used to correct presbyopia in patients who do not yet have cataracts. These patients will never require cataract surgery, because an artificial lens will never develop a cataract.

Astigmatism, a common eye condition caused by an irregularly shaped cornea or lens, causes distorted or blurred vision. Limbal Relaxing Incisions (LRI) and Toric lenses are two surgical options designed to correct astigmatism. Before these advancements in technology, patients with astigmatism were required to continue wearing corrective lenses to see more clearly after their cataract surgery. With these surgical techniques, astigmatism patients may now be less dependent on glasses.

Limbal Relaxing Incisions (LRI) and Toric Lenses

Limbal relaxing incisions involve making incisions in the cornea to relax the misshapen cornea, allowing for normal vision to be restored. For cataract patients who are candidates for LRI, your surgeon will do a standard cataract procedure, replacing your cloudy lens with a clear one, and then complete the LRI procedure. Toric lenses are another option to treat both cataracts and astigmatism. The unique design of the Toric lenses makes it possible to reduce or eliminate astigmatism and significantly improve uncorrected distance vision while removing the lens clouded by cataracts. These lenses also improve contrast sensitivity in low-light situations, such as driving at night. Toric lenses are ideal for patients with astigmatism who desire an active lifestyle with reduced need for glasses or contacts.

Because your eyes are so important in everything you do, selecting a premium lens is a very personal decision. At McDonald Eye Associates, not only do we want to help you consider all of your options, we want to assist you in deciding on the best lens for you and the lifestyle you desire for the years to come.
