Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month

August is Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month, and we want to highlight the importance of protecting your child’s vision.

Children's eyes are constantly developing, and even if your child seems to see clearly, underlying issues may not always be noticeable at first. Without early detection and treatment, vision problems can lead to more serious conditions, such as amblyopia (lazy eye) or strabismus (crossed eyes).

Common Pediatric Eye Conditions:

  • Astigmatism
  • Myopia (nearsightedness)
  • Hyperopia (farsightedness)
  • Ptosis (droopy eyelid)
  • Cellulitis
  • Conjunctivitis (pink eye)
  • Styes and chalazions
  • Pediatric glaucoma
  • Pediatric cataracts
  • Blocked tear ducts
  • Crossed Eyes (Strabismus)

Genetic or congenital eye conditions may not be obvious at birth, making annual eye exams a crucial part of your child’s overall health care. Routine visits help detect both common and rare issues early, before they impact development or learning.

Preventing Eye Injuries in Children

Protecting children’s vision goes beyond the exam room. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, 90% of pediatric eye injuries are preventable with the right protective measures.

Many eye injuries happen during sports or recreational activities. Teaching children the importance of wearing protective eyewear and practicing eye safety can significantly reduce the risk of injury. This also includes everyday activities, like using toys appropriately and avoiding sharp or dangerous objects.

Managing Screen Time and Digital Eye Strain

With increased screen time for education and entertainment, children can develop digital eye strain, also known as computer vision syndrome.  Common symptoms include:

  • Dry eyes
  • Headaches
  • Blurred vision

To reduce these symptoms, encourage your child to follow the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. Regular breaks and time spent outdoors can also promote healthier vision habits.
